In Mexico, we don’t grieve death. On the contrary, we dance and sing to death.
Day of the Death is the most alive day in Mexico.
Day of the Death is the most Mexican day of all. I dare to say that even before celebrating the Independence or the Revolution; we celebrate death. No speeches are made, no public celebration is being held.
Day of the Death is when the Mexican laughs and mocks death. It is the day when you stare in its eyes and share a drink from a bottle of tequila or mezcal.
Cementeries in Michoacán and Oaxaca are filled with Cempatzuchitl flowers while candles light up the spaces between graves. These spaces are then filled with light that shows the dead the way to come back to their homes and share food and drinks that they enjoyed the most with their loved ones who are paying their annual visit.
Women, men, boys and girls stay awake on the night of November 1st and the morning of November 2nd. They stay close to their family’s graves waiting to see them one more time or remembering them through their most loved memories.
The children then run and stroll around through crosses and crowns asking for a treat or a coin for their calabacita (“little pumpkin”).
I have come to the conclusion that the day you understand the meaning of death, it is the day you begin living.
That same day is the day you understand how important every action is; how your story will be told to the ones that come after you, and what legacy you will leave behind.
Shipping: Your order will ship from Austin, Texas via FedEx. You will receive a shipping notification and tracking information via email once the print leaves our studio. Poster prints can be expected to ship within three-five business days. Editioned prints require eight days due to the extra time required for printing as they are specially made for each order and requiere signature from Diego Huerta (who might be on assignment). We will let you know about this so you can have the correct expectations.
All prints ordered from Love of Color by Diego Huerta are personally overseen and signed by Diego himself. We use museum quality Hahnemuhle and Epson archival paper and ink and pack them for shipping with the highest care. We are a very small operation and don’t outsource your order to a huge printing factory. This means that you can expect the highest quality print possible. We will do our very best to get your order to you in a timely manner, but please understand that it might not ship right away.
Requesting Prints: If your favorite photograph isn’t shown in the store, don’t fret. If you would like a specific editioned print that you don’t see, please send me an email to studio@behindmystories.com . We will contact you personally to discuss your print request.
Artist Proofs: Diego Huerta retains the right to create and sell AP (Artist Proofs) of editioned prints.
Returns: If your print was damaged in transit please contact us with photos showing the damage within 48 hours of delivery, otherwise all sales are considered final. After we assess the damage, you will be asked to send the print back so we can send you out another print in its place.
Missing Shipments: No matter what courier is used, lost packages are an inevitability. Sometimes packages get stuck in customs… If your shipment doesn’t make its way to you within 8 weeks, please contact us so we can make it right.
